Boulevard Construction Continues With Crosswalk Installation

The last major construction component of the current Boulevard improvement project is expected to continue this week.

Construction to install new crosswalks to a two-block section of the Boulevard is slated to begin this week.

The project has been ongoing since the summer and this will be the last major construction component in this current phase of the revitalization project according to Borough Engineer Ken Job. Originally it was stated this work would begin at the end of October but the hurricane pushed most projects back a week or two.

New crosswalks will be put in at the intersections of Boulevard at Franklin and Hamilton avenues. New sidewalks and pavers were put in in this two-block section along with new light poles and new trees.

The construction of the crosswalks will just about complete this phase in the project. To date work has been done to revitalize four blocks of the Boulevard from Washington up to Hamilton. Hasbrouck Heights has received  four installments of grant funding from the state Department of Transportation to pay for construction costs for the four block section. The borough has already received a fifth grant which will fund construction to revitalize the next block heading south Hamilton to Walter.

Job said Tuesday night the borough has completed an application for a sixth grant which will fund work from Walter to Division. The goal is to continue revitalizing the Boulevard in phases of one to two blocks at a time depending upon grants received. The plan is to improve the remaining portion of the Boulevard up to the traffic circle at Passaic Avenue.

Job said preliminary construction plan for the next section of the Boulevard from Hamilton to Walter is likely set for spring 2013. If grant money for Walter to Division is approved they will work to combine the two projects into one to save on costs, Job said.

The borough funds the engineering costs and any additional funding needed.

The plan is to go north as well but I believe it's after they complete the sound end first and also if grant funding is still available.
ABC, I had asked about the benches last month and I believe a previous story said they were ordered but there was no specific time frame for when they will be installed.

Will be happy when it's finished. The Blvd businesses have felt it terribly. The parking problem is bad enough...then to arrive at work to discover the road is closed. I know for myself I could have changed my hours for this week if I had some kind of warning. I do want to comment though that you are doing a great job and I enjoy receiving daily e.mails from patch! Thanks
