Heights Community Awards $45K in Scholarships to Graduates

The annual senior awards ceremony brought out members of the community from town organizations as well as individuals who established scholarships in honor of loved ones to present awards to students which combined equalled $45,000 in scholarship money.

Organizations such as the Hasbrouck Heights Elks Lodge, the Hasbrouck Heights Mens Association, Republican Club, PTAs of all the schools, and many more groups give out scholarship money every year.

The Euclid Masonic Lodge gives out awards to 10 students every year with a special ceremony at the lodge set for this Friday. Arthur Jackson, the lodge's Worshipful Master, was on hand to honor the students Monday.

Mayor Rose Heck presented the Mary B. Quibb Scholarships, the Andrew Feintuch Memorial Scholarship, named for the borough's first recreation director, which went to Alexander Hodulik.

She also presented the Chris Heller Memorial Scholarship, named for an active community leader in town, which went to Katherine Gasparino and Jonathan Diaz as well as the Mayor's Award which went to Sarah Scalero. 

Some scholarship awards were new this year such as the Peter D. Hofmann Engineering Scholarship named after a Hasbrouck Heights native who worked as an engineer with Con Edison for more than 20 years. His wife Gina told the audience she wanted to do something in honor of his memory and donations from Peter's colleagues at Con Edison helped make it possible.

"I know he'd be honored to have an engineering scholarship in his name," she said. The award was given to Promise Dada.

In addition to scholarships a number of awards were presented to the students for achievements in academics, arts, athletics, journalism and the newest one -the science award.

Kevin O'Leary was named the first recipient of new scholarship established by the district's administrative team. High school Principal Linda Simmons said O'Leary is a peer leader who always leads by example and always says what is on his mind but in a nice way that makes one want to listen to him.

High school teacher Mike Warren received a huge applause from his students returning after a leave of absence to present the Hasbrouck Heights Education Association Memorial Scholarship to Katherine Gasparino and Brian Colton.
