Readers' Choice: Best Beer List

Where do you drink your Dogfish Head, Rogue, Stone, Ommegang and Allagash?

It's craft beer week in New Jersey, which coincides with the start of The Atlantic City Beer and Music Fest on Friday.

So in honor of hopheads across the state, we've turned to beer for this week's edition of Readers' Choice.

No longer is craft beer only for the most dedicated, sophisticated enthusiasts. In the last few years, established pubs have replaced many of their traditional taps, and hip new upstarts have rolled in the casks to cash in on the craze.

With beer offerings ranging from New Jersey's own Hop-A-Lot-Amus to Ommegang's Seducation Ale, there are numerous spots pouring craft pints while shunning Buds.

So we leave it up to you, beer drinkers of Bergen and Passaic counties, to tell us who has the best beer list in the area. Take the poll below, tell us why your selection is tops and share your favorite in the comments.

And bar owners, make sure to add what's on tap at your place.

While your thinking about this all-important decision, check out Patch Regional Editor Tom Troncone's choice for the perfect spring beer.

And while we came up with the list below, we encourage you to post businesses we missed that may fit in the “Best Beer List” category in the comments below.

Voting closes at 9 a.m. Friday and official rules are attached to this story in a .pdf file.

Correct Rick, and their Quad is fantastic. Only we never said they were from New Jersey. We said "FROM New Jersey's own Hop-A-Lot-Amus TO Ommegang's Seducation Ale."

I was confident I've visited nearly every place cool in our region, but I'm 15 and 6 on this list, although the 15 I had been to are well deserved to make it on your list Tom. Of course, there are a number of more venues that did not make the cut, nevertheless you prove to have a grasp of some great Public Houses in your Patch area.

It's hard to pick just one from this list. I have to say that if you really like a wide variety of craft beer, enjoy trying and learning about new ones, and you've never been to the Copper Mine Pub in North Arlington and Andy's Corner Bar in Bogota, then do yourself a huge favor and get to both. You will not be disappointed.

I'm glad to see Bistro 55 getting some press, and it does have an impressive tap list, but it's more like a restaurant that has good beer than a beer bar. At Andy's and the Copper Mine, it's just beer. Both places let you order from a large selection of menus that they have on hand (get Mexican from next door at Andy's, Kamal Palace up the road at Copper Mine; both deliver) and both are filled with people who know and love beer.

And I'm sorry, but Biddy O'Malley's has 135 votes to Copper Mine's 8 and the 32 for Andy's?!? This is a popularity contest. Compare their tap lists any day, day in day out, and Biddy's will be put to shame. Harp Lager, Blue Moon, Smithwicks, Yuengling - seriously?

Copper Mine now has 9 votes...awesome beer selection, and Vito rocks!! :)

I wouldnt be so quick to dismiss Bistro 55 as being "like a restaurant that has good beer rather than a beer bar". The person who runs the bar there has an exceptionally high level of knowledge about beer. They are constantly running beer events and doing special nights (they are running an IPA night this Wednesday with an absolutely ridiculous tap list). The place is also constantly filled with people who love beer and can talk your ear off about it. I know..I am one of them :)

And this poll is for "Best Beer List" not "Best Beer Bar". I love Andy's and Copper Mine as well. I've been many times..George and Vito certainly do love beer and they most definitely have a high level of knowledge with great tap lists.

But the best beer lists (in my mind) are found at Bistro 55.

I too also like Biddy O'Malleys but it went from having 0 votes to 135 overnight. Hmmkay?

Couldn't agree more about Jessica at Bistro55. She makes it fun.

FYI, though, when you see a jump in votes it is (usually) attributed to an establishment trying to get out the vote through social media, etc.

I didn't intend to 'dismiss' Bistro 55; I was simply comparing its atmosphere to other places for the wider audience. Yes, the article is titled 'beer list', not 'beer bar', but for people who've never been to any of those places, some background couldn't hurt.

Tom's right: Jessica is on top of it when it comes to beer. And as others have pointed out, so are Vito and George. That's an area for subjectivity, just as comparing beer lists is.

I've enjoyed the food at Bistro 55 and I'll be back, but as far as knocking back a pint or three, with or without the option of ordering from one of at least a half-dozen genres of food to accompany that brew, it's more often than not going to be Andy's or the Copper Mine for me.

@B.Schmidt..different strokes, different folks :)

I would agree that Andy's and Copper Mine are more "Beer Bars". It's all subjectve as you said but I think we can all agree that we are lucky to even have this discussion in the first place.

Wow thats a lot of votes!

Twisted Elm is quite good. Not on the level of Andy's, etc with the beer menus but still good. Another new place that just opened up is Three Blind Monks is Garfield (former home of Taps). They've got quite a tap list as well.

Yep warm beer lousy food haha. It's right down the street from my house actually. All the taps are craft beer. Sidewinder's is unforunately closed. That was my hangout when I was younger. It switched owners and changed names 100 times and now it's vacant.

I will be at Bistro tomorrow too!

Ladies and gentlemen, I just read all your comments with interest. David, with regard to the spike in Biddy O'Malley's votes, I am sure what Tom suggested, is what happened. I was not even aware of this poll until I saw you posted it on Facebook, recommending Bistro 55, I in turn just recommended the link on my Facebook page and Twitter.B.Scmidt, yes we do carry Harp, Yuengling etc. but we also carry selections from Ommegang,Defiant and Dogfish on draft and selections from Yards, Bear Republic, Weyerbacher,Abita, Rogue, Stone and Innis & Gunn in a bottle, so don't be so quick to write us off, remember 5 years ago you wouldn't have seen anything like that in this area with the exception of Andys. Be glad more people like me are willing to push these selections and give people the options as this is not what the masses want, despite what you may think. My personal vote goes to Andys.

From the list I'd say Bistro 55, from the tap I'm going with Taphouse, and from the bottle in the beer case I'll recommend Amazing Grapes in Pompton Lakes.

Andy's is a place where the late British guru, Michael Jackson, often went just to enoy a few beers in private while "off-pond." Am proud to have been a member of Beers International before its leader and Mike's pal, Rich Stolarz passed away, to end our excellent education about beer. Hat's off to the IRS for closing Company B in Ramsey, since now heard we all could be monitored. Guess my opinion?

Have a PS. Just a year or so ago, Charlie Brown's had one weekday where all their offerings were just $2, I think Thursdays. See that's long over, after their restructure. I recall the Front Porch in Hawthorne doing the same $2 offer on Sundays, and it may be still in effect.

Not on the list, but Shepard and Knucklehead in Haledon has an insane tap system - I'm pretty sure they just about double any taps I've seen (including Taphouse) - and they were expanding (haven't been there since last fall, but it was quite a selection then)...

Hey everyone, I'm Matt the Beer Manager at the Taphouse Grille. Here's my taplist:
Dogfish Head 90min
Dogfish Head India Brown Ale
Allagash White
The Lost Abbey Carnevale
Ramstein Double Platinum Blonde
Cricket Hill East Coast Lager
Victory Donnybrook (Nitro)
Victory Prima Pils
Long Trail Ale
Long Trail Triple Bag
Blue Point Toxic Sludge
Kane Head High IPA
Carton of Milk Stout
Firestone Walker Double Jack
Founders Red's Rye
Breckenridge Vanilla Porter
Unibroue La Terrible
Ithaca Apricot Wheat
Nectar IPA
Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout
Sixpoint Resin
Defiant Bear Mountain
Doc's Framboise Cider
Innis and Gunn Rum Cask
This list will probably change by the time anyone comes in since I rotate everything so often. We also have a lot of events coming up like Kane Brewing Night tonight for NJCB week, next week I'm tapping a very rare Easter Ale from Belgium and April 18th we are having a Ramstein Dinner. As far as bottles go, I try to not carry craft bottles because they tend to sit and I like to give customers the freshest possible beer I can. Unless, of course, it's a beer I can age.

I will make a point to get by and try one of your Unibroue offerings. Trois Pistoles stands out, as do Don de Dieu, La Fin du Monde and Quelque Chose. All their beer is solid.

I can appreciate a good IPA, and Double Jack is solid (have had it at both Coppermine and Bistro 55 in NJ), but I've been blown away by their 15 and Parabola; both have been on tap at Coppermine. That's my kind of beer.

DMAB, since the best places change whats on tap regularly, it's hard to say. I'm fairly certain that both are imported in bottles. I'd try -- depending where you live -- Beer and Wine Depot on Riverview Drive in (Wayne? Totowa?) or Gary's Wine Marketplace to start.

Had this tonight at Bistro 55: http://www.portbrewing.com/our-beers/mongo-double-ipa/ ... best of the bunch tonight I thought. Weyerbacher Simcoe Double was good too. Soudts Double IPA was also solid, and tasted nothing like a 10.5% beer. Of course the DFH 120 tapped out first. They listed 18%, but I'm told that the 2012 brew is 21% because of the maturity of the yeast strain.

What is the most incredible is if you would like something to be brought in Matt will do his best to get it on tap for you. The taps here are always changing which is also good. There is usally something different on tap each time you come in. I was just in a couple days ago and saw Lost Abbey on tap. I was thrilled!!! Then I noticed they had Terrible on tap.
