Balloon Festival: Patch Will Send You Into the Sky

Event celebrates its 30th season.

When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …

If you want a FREE close up time with the ballon, or a ballon, go to the 6:00 AM launch, but don't go into the festival. Then pick a special ballon and chase it. It will land someplace that is close to a road. The balloon people are more than happy to have you there.   more ›

Metal, Music and Metallica Fuels These Musicians

Heights based teen metal band Last Resort is rocking the local stages

Metal music is what it's all about for Last Resort. It's something the five members of the Heights-based metal band have shared since before they even started writing and jamming in their drummer's garage. The five members of the group, all 16 and 17 year old high school students, are almost always together working on new songs, jamming or just hanging out. Drummer Tyler Melendez says they practice pretty much every day in his garage. Whenever they have time they are there jamming. Kelly Moran, vocalist, says even on days where her schedule gets extra busy she always stops by on the way home to sing a few songs. In addition to Tyler and Kelly, Last Resort includes members Steven Continanza on guitar, Etay Hami on bass and Gabryel Torres on…

Last Chance To See 'The Man Who Came To Dinner'

Final performance of the "The Man Who Came to Dinner," the newest production of the Bergen County Players, is April 21.

Bergen County Players production of The Man Who Came to Dinner by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, at the Little Firehouse Theatre closes April 21 at 8 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased online, by calling 201-261-4200, or by visiting the box office at 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell during regular box office hours. About the show. .  Witty but acerbic theater critic Sheridan Whiteside arrives in a small town of Ohio just before the Christmas holiday and immediately breaks his leg. D’oh!: Simpsons’ Springfield Not in Jersey

Matt Groening spills the beans on home state of fictional Springfield.

Worst pop culture geography reveal ever?  Since The Simpsons started airing, the state hosting its dysfunctional hamlet Springfield has been both a mystery and a running joke. After decades of hints and misinformation, the mystery and hilarity over the statehood of the Simpson’s Springfield crescendo-ed in a quick visual gag in The Simpsons Movie showing the four states that border Springfield: Ohio, Nevada, Maine and Kentucky. That joke came on the heels of a national promotional contest in 2007 where towns named Springfield from across America competed in a chance to be declared the Simpsons’ hometown. Springfield, N.J., residents made a fun video recreating the show's opening credits for a contest for which Springfield would host the …

Marietta Prato Keeps Music Alive in Heights

Piano and voice teacher gives lessons and hosts recitals in her Heights home

Marietta Prato has been surrounded by music her whole life. Some of her early music memories are of learning the piano at her aunt's Hasbrouck Heights home. That love for music has brought her full circle as she has devoted her life to teaching piano and voice instruction to children in Heights and surrounding communities. Prato, who is originally from Wood-Ridge, started out teaching four students when she lived in Rutherford. She also taught part-time in schools. When she and her husband moved to Hasbrouck Heights in 1999 she began teaching from her home and she’s been doing it ever since. “I love what I am doing,” says Prato who added that she has a very understanding husband who doesn’t mind that they eat dinner like they do in Europe…
