Pascrell, Rothman Spar Over Liberal Record in 9th District Primary Debate

Same-sex marriage, abortion rights at issue in televised debate

Democrat incumbent Congressmen Steve Rothman and Bill Pascrell Jr. faced off Monday night at Montclair State University in a heated debate with both candidates touting their liberal voting records.  Rothman said he supported same-sex marriage before Pascrell did and cited his record of support for a woman’s right to choose. Pascrell, who was recently endorsed by former President Bill Clinton, said he voted with President Obama 94 percent of the time, according to an Associated Press report. "I'd say I am the progressive voice of the Democratic Party represented here. I am the Democrat's Democrat up here," Rothman said, wnyc.org reported. Rothman also said senior Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod would support him. Rothman touted his …

FDU Poll: Obama, Christie OK; Women Cool on Romney

About half approve of job president is doing

Our Republican governor gets good marks from the Garden State, but so does our Democratic president, according to the latest poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind. Barack Obama also has a solid lead over Mitt Romney in New Jersey, according to the poll — especially among women. Read the full statement from FDU below, then let us know what you think. According the latest poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, 50 percent of New Jersey voters say they approve of the way the president is handling his job, while 42 percent disapprove. These numbers mirror the support expressed by New Jerseyans for their Republican governor, Chris Christie, as reported yesterday: 56 percent approve of the job Christie is doing, …

Pascrell, Rothman Find Little Nice to Say in Debate

The Democratic 9th Congressional district crossed swords in a debate at Bergen Community College.

Toward the end of his debate with fellow Congressman and Democrat Steve Rothman, Bill Pascrell was asked to say something nice about his opponent in the race for New Jersey's. "I think he has been a loyal Democrat," Pascrell said. "When it suits his purpose." That's about as cordial as it got in a debate Monday at Bergen Community College, in which Rothman doggedly attacked Pascrell's record, while Pascrell continued to criticize Rothman for running against him instead of challenging Scott Garrett in the redrawn 5th District. Rothman came to the debate prepared to burnish his own credentials as a progressive and to tear down Pascrell's on issues like abortion, marriage equality, immigration, taxes and the government bailouts of the …

Bill Clinton Endorses Pascrell for Congress

Pascrell says he is running to stop Tea Party.

Former President Bill Clinton has endorsed Rep. Bill Pascrell over fellow Democrat Rep. Steve Rothman for congress in the 9th District. "Bill helped write President Obama’s health care law, he’s a leader protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare, and he never stops fighting for the middle class,” Clinton said in a statement. “Nothing is more important to Bill than creating jobs in New Jersey. I saw that in the eight years we worked together to build unprecedented prosperity for America.” “I am honored to have the support of Bill Clinton,” Pascrell said in a statement."Fighting side by side with President Clinton, our nation achieved tremendous prosperity and a balanced budget.” Pascrell took aim the Tea Party and Former …

I'm with Bill (Clinton) and Bill (Pascrell). The literature from FAT Steve Rothman is full of lies--he supported the Iraq war, a follower, not a leader, and so afraid he wouldn't make a living if we taxpayers didn't support him that he didn't have the guts/balls to take on Garrett.   more ›

Judge Rules Against 'Birthers' Who Want Obama Removed From Ballot

Administrative Law judge says issue is irrelevant; Obama is automatically on ballot as President.

A state judge has ruled against objectors seeking to remove President Barack Obama's name from New Jersey's upcoming primary ballot. Administrative Law Judge Jeff Masin ruled against the ballot challenge following a more than three-hour hearing earlier this week, according to attorney Mario Apuzzo, who represents two New Jersey men who brought the challenge. The challenge centered on the men's contention that Obama is not a natural born citizen of the United States and that a birth certificate released by the White House last April is fraudulent. The judge ruled that Obama's place on the ballot could not be removed by challenge because Obama, as president, automatically appears on the ballot. "The sham continues. In one way or another it's…

Three Seek Council Seats This Year

One Democrat challenges Republican incumbents

Both Democrats and Republicans have announced their candidates for the municipal council election this year. Republican incumbent council members John Dingertopadre, a local business owner, and Russell Lipari, a semi-retired engineer, are seeking re-election. Both seek their second term on the council. Chris Semenecz runs for council on the Democratic ticket. Semenecz has previously served on the council. He sought election last year as an Independent candidate for mayor but later dropped out of the race. The three candidates will be on their respective political party tickets in June 5 primary election. Independent candidates have until June 5 at 4 p.m. to file petition to run in the Nov. 6 election.

Primary Battles Expose Rift Among NJ Democrats

North Jersey features two close contests after redistricting, death

By Colleen O'Dea, NJSpotlight.com The internal fighting among New Jersey’s Democrats will move to election booths in June as the party’s high-profile primary battles in two congressional districts take center stage. In both cases, Districts 9 and 10 in North Jersey, the winner of the June 5 primary are considered favorite to win the general election in November. They are two of the nine districts with a primary battle for at least one of the parties, but the only ones expected to be close. “They are the only primaries of any note,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. The lack of significant GOP primary contests parallels the relative unanimity within the party, headed by Gov. Chris Christie. The …

Want To Be On The Board Of Education?

Petitions are now available at the Board office

Those interested in throwing their hat into the ring for the first-ever November school board election can get their campaign started now that petitions are available in the Board of Education office. Dina Messery, business administrator, said June 5 at 4 p.m. is the deadline for filing the petition with the county Board of Elections.  At the start of this year, Governor Chris Christie granted all districts the right to choose between April and November to hold its annual election. Heights joined many other Bergen County districts voting in favor of moving election to November. As a result, the three current members of the board whose terms would have expired this month are serving out extended terms until the end of the year. Board …

School Elections Move to November, Budget Vote Eliminated

Board of Education trustees voted 6 to 3 in favor of moving election to November. Public vote of school budgets within 2 percent cap has been eliminated.

Board of Education trustees voted 6 to 3 in favor of moving the school elections to November and eliminating the need for a public vote on school budgets that come within 2 percent cap on the tax levy. As a result of the Thursday night decision, voters will not go to the polls this April and will instead vote for board trustees up for re-election in November as part of the general election. Dina Messery, business administrator, explained that all the deadlines for budget approval will remain the same. The 2012-2013 budget process will go on as scheduled and the board must host public hearings on the budget, she said. The budget for the next school year has to be approved prior to the new fiscal year which begins in July and must be within …
