Apple Means Business

Apple & IBM – a transformative partnership?

Yesterday two giants of the tech world announced a partnerships that is being described by some as earth-shattering, ground breaking, and a momentous decision for the technology world. Both firms are Fortune 500 organizations with revenues in the hundreds of billions, R&D spending that is amongst the highest in the world, and dominant marketplace positions. Additionally, both organizations are market leaders in their respective industry sub-sectors, and have commanding market positions.

That said, however, both organizations do suffer from substantial weaknesses in large areas of the technology and computing marketplace. IBM is universally known as the business computing company – enterprise technology, Big Data analytics, and business solutions are the organizations bread and butter. Apple, on the other hand, is the unrivaled king of the consumer technology; iPhones, iPads, and Mac Computers dominate the consumer electronic space. In addition to the hardware, the software eco-system that has been created is unrivaled in terms of both depth and breadth. But IBM has virtually no presence in the consumer space, and Apple has had limited success penetrating the business side of technology.

By joining forces, with IBM creating over 100 business applications to run on Apple’s products, generates tremendous opportunities for both organizations. IBM, via its presence on Apple products, gets a toehold in the consumer electronics space, and Apple gets an introduction to the business electronic landscape.

Food for thought indeed!
