NJ Cops, Firemen & War Vet Prep Featured Classics at NY Int'l Car Show

The New Jersey contingent of the infamous Detailers Network (formerly known as the Detailing Mafia) led by former Jersey City policeman Harry Sandwith of Rochelle Park’s Dirty Harry’s Detailing, prepped and detailed two fully restored classic vehicles featured at the 2014 New York International Car Show April 18-27. As the official detailer of record for New York’s Premier Restorations, Harry and his band of Jersey-based detailers detailed a 1967 Camaro RS, which had been sitting in storage for 14 years and showed significant rust damage; and a 1970 Ford 250 Pick-up truck once used as a wind block for cattle on a Wyoming ranch.

The New Jersey crew includes the Dirty Harry’s team including Harry’s son Joseph Sandwith, a current Jersey City police officer; and Alex Melendez, a US Marine veteran, recently returned from a combat tour in Afghanistan. The rest of the team includes police officer Bob Wiener of West Long Branch’s Finer Details; and retired career firefighter Anthony Torlish of Distinctive Detailing in Flemington. The team’s mentor, Renny Doyle of Attention to Details and Detailing Success out of Big Bear, California is arriving for the East Coast Detailers Weekend and will be a guest speaker at the New York Car Show on April 27.

“These two classic vehicles needed show-winning shines,” Sandwith says. “It was the perfect opportunity to use my certification as a Gtechniq protective coatings studio to give the F-250 the ultimate gloss finish using three stacks of Gtechniq’s EXOv2 Ultra Durable Hybrid Coating. EXO offers sensational dirt repellency, gloss, and durability that cannot be removed except on purpose.” The EXOv2 formula is a hard protective exterior coating with shine properties that enrich the luster of the paint. The result is a sustained wet-look shine that repels dirt and dangerous UV rays. EXOv2 will last through multiple washings and the vehicle requires no wax or polish.

“The Camaro is still street-worthy and the owner may make further modifications so we did not feel the longevity of the EXO was the best choice for that vehicle,” Sandwith explains. “Instead, we went with Sonax Polymer Net Shield for the exterior, an outstanding professional-grade paint protection product that protects for up to six months and especially enhances the color of the paint, producing a silky, smooth surface.”

The team also used Sonax interior products on both cars. They used their chosen Flex Buffers with DRC foam pads, preferred over standard flat pads because they disperse the compound more evenly over the surface; and Black Pearl Tire & Trim to treat the tires and the hard plastics inside the engine bay.

The New York International Car Show opens to the public on April 18 and runs through the 27th at the Jacob Javits Center on 11th Avenue between 34th and 40th Streets in NYC. Both vehicles will be on display in the Premier Restoration Booth #1331 on the first Floor.

Dirty Harry’s and the Jersey Trio have tackled many community-wide detailing projects, usually on a pro bono basis. They refurbished a dozen emergency vehicles damaged by Hurricane Sandy in Union Beach; reconditioned four historic fire trucks for exhibition in the New Jersey Fire Engine & Equipment Museum; and detailed motorcycles at the 2nd Annual Wounded Veterans Memorial Bike Ride last summer. Sandwith is also an official Air Force One detailer and team leader, one of only 35 detailers nationwide to restore the shine on the original Air Force One presidential jet and numerous other museum-worthy aircraft.
