Hurricane Brings Horrors to Hasbrouck Heights

Power is out all around parts of Hasbrouck Heights on Tuesday as the borough begins to pick up the pieces of the horrors which Hurricane Sandy left behind, on the eve of Halloween.

Various streets are closed due to downed power lines such as part of Williams which has downed wires lying in the road and in the driveway of a home. The entrance to Woodland Park at the base of Roosevelt is lined with caution tape as a downed wire hangs in the roadway.

Polify Road park has a massive tree uprooted lying across the park.

The Garafalo family on Stanley Avenue told Patch Tuesday morning they have been without power since 6 p.m. Monday. Up the street from them a large tree lays in the roadway with downed wires.

DPW trucks were seen about town working to clear tree debris from roads and homes.

Disastrous scenes were strewn about town as large uprooted trees leaned against homes. In one case a tree smashed two vehicles in a driveway.

Hasbrouck Heights Police Officer Scott Adamo said several areas around town still have no power.

Most businesses were closed although Rite Aid, Fisher's Cafe and Lovey's Pizza were all open by noon Tuesday.

Verizon Wireless store on Route 17 South opened Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. Sales man Sedat Kukul says he expected it to be quiet but many people are coming in buying car chargers for their phones.

The Department of Energy reports that 62 percent of New Jersey is without power.
