Community Spotlight: Care on the Corner

Find out more about this not-for-profit organization which has been offering community services to the Heights community for more than a decade.

continues to be a resource for the community offering educational-based programs like ESL, citizenship classes, computer skills for adults and homework help, tutoring and theater-based classes for children.

It began a little more than a decade ago as the mission of the and has grown more and more each year. , who recently retired from the church, was instrumental in the birth of Care on the Corner, leading it to become the resource it is known as today.

Housed literally on the corner of Franklin Avenue and Terrace next to St. John's, the organization hosts fundraisers each year which enables them to offer programs. Many teachers volunteer their time to help the organization offer classes that are based on the needs of the community. The organization charges a small fee for courses and also provides scholarships when available.

Upcoming classes and events include:

Summer tutoring program: A two-week summer tutoring program for children in grades 1 to 5. The program began this week and will continue next week from. Aug. 20 to Aug. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration fee is $10 per day. Ask the office about scholarships which may be available.

Adult ESL Classes: Registration is from Sept. 12 and Sept. 19.  Classes start Wednesday, Sept. 26 and will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The last class will be Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Kids on the Corner: The 6-week theater program for children will run from Oct. 12 until Nov. 16 (performance night). The class meets every Friday from 3:30 until 6 p.m. The fee is $25 per child with a cap of $50 per family. Scholarships are available upon request. Space is limited.

Citizenship Preparation: Registration will be held Sept. 12 and Sept. 19 for this six-week program which meets Monday nights beginning Monday, Oct. 15, ending Monday, Nov. 19. Each class runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. A registration form along with a non-refundable $15 processing fee, must be completed for each student. Financial assistance is available.

Communicating With Your Hands: This class will begin Monday, Sept. 24, ending Monday, Nov. 26. It meets from 7 to 9 p.m. and is held at St. John Episcpal Church. Students will learn the fundamentals of sign language in Signed Exact English (EE). There is a non-refundable materials/registration fee of $50 . This includes a manual, created by the instructor and weekly handouts.

Care on the Corner is gearing up for its annual fundraiser "An Evening of Jazz Music and Dancing" featuring the Big Easy Trio with Mark Wright. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Fiesta in Wood-Ridge. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $45 each. Price includes dinner, entertainment, door prizes and some gaming tickets.
