The membership started the afternoon devouring a five pound tub of vanilla ice cream donated by Alex Reyes of Fisher’s Café with an array of toppings from which to choose. Members chose from traditional toppings as sprinkles, whipped cream and cherries and trendy ones as breakfast cereals, multi-color M & M’s, freshly picked raspberries and mini-cookies.

After creating their ice cream sundaes, members sat down to business. Chairman Justin Watrel discussed upcoming events on the Juniors calendar. Members were asked to help volunteer  for the upcoming Library Summer Bash on August 2nd, participate in a new program called “Cooking with the Juniors: Part One Pizza Making, a series of cooking classes to promote creative cooking to pre-teens and teens. The First Annual Grandparents Day Lunch was discussed, which will be on Grandparent’s Day, September 8th, 2013 at the Crow’s Nest. This is an event the Juniors are promoting to the community as a way for multi-generations to sit down together for an afternoon of good food and conversation. It is the perfect way for families to spend time together before the beginning of the school year.

The Juniors will then open their Fall programming with their Third Annual Pizza Bash & Movie Night to open the Halloween holiday season. They will host Professor Angus Gillespie from Rutgers University to an open community event on a discussion of the Legend of the New Jersey Devil on October 10th. The Juniors are also in the pre-planning stage of their first fundraiser of the holiday season, “Teens, Tots & Toys” toy drive and holiday event. The donations will be made to Gilda’s Club and Emmanuel Cancer Center to benefit families affected by cancer and cancer awareness.

After the meeting, in keeping with Juniors tradition of a film forum, showing a classic film and its remake, the Juniors screened to members the original 1975 version of “Escape to Witch Mountain” with Kim Richards and Chris Eisenmann. They then enjoyed a pizza dinner at the intermission sponsored by Friends member Warren Watrel from Roma Pizza. Then all members enjoyed the 2009 remake “Race to Witch Mountain” with Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino.

It was a fun night for everyone who attended and was the perfect way to kick off the Summer Programming season.
