Subworks: Corner shop that serves super sandwiches and more..

 

“I have been in the restaurant business for most of my life,” said owner Lois Kaiser. “And over time, I learned the art of the perfect sandwich.”

With almost thirty years in the restaurant business, Lois Kaiser has been perfecting her craft in the quick service business. This born and raised native New Jersean keeps perfecting her craft. After a short retirement from the business, this ten year resident of Hasbrouck Heights wanted to take on another challenge. Celebrating their first anniversary in Hasbrouck Heights, ‘Subworks’ has been steadily building a loyal clientele. “We have been very lucky since day one,” Lois explained. “We have customers that come every day to eat lunch with us.”

When asked what her recipe for success in building such loyalty, Lois said, “Quality and good service. Everything in the shop is homemade and cooked to order. I make my sandwiches with Portuguese breads that I bring in from a bakery in Newark. I think that they are lighter and have a nicer quality than other breads I have used in the past and give the sandwich more flavor.” High quality meats are used in her deli sandwiches but what gives ‘Subworks’ that extra special touch are the homemade items that are made on premise.

“My meatballs are a third generation recipe that I got from my grandmother,” Lois explained. “All of our sauces are made in our kitchen here in the shop and I cook our Roast Beef and Roast Pork fresh every day for our sandwiches. This gives our sandwiches extra juiciness and more flavor than processed meats that other restaurants use. I make all of our Chipotle, Cajun and Tomato sauces for our sandwiches. This is the reason why our Cuban sandwiches and French Dips are big with our customers.”

 “All of our chicken and shrimp come in fresh daily and this is what makes our Shrimp Po’boy sandwiches and specialty chicken sandwiches so popular,” Lois added. Some of the other popular items on the menu are their Italian Hero, the Chicken Club, the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Philly Cheese Steaks, Italian Eggplant Sandwich and Cuban sandwich. Their breakfast sandwich ‘the Belly Buster’, which is three eggs, ham, bacon, sausage and cheese has proven a very popular choice in the mornings.

“We are currently in the process of changing and expanding our menu,” Lois said. “We will be having 50 varieties of sandwiches, wraps, Panini and salads. We will be expanding our catering and including more hot and cold items. We are expanding our breakfast menu to include menu selections such as omelets, pancakes and waffles. If there is something on our menu that you want us to make, we can make it for you. We will work with our customers to make the menu items that they want.”

When asked the real success of Subworks is, Lois explained, “It is the three ‘C’s. Cleanliness, Consistency and Customer Service.”
