Why Should You Hire a Professional Pet Sitter or Dog Walker?

Remember watching that show from the 50’s Leave it to Beaver?  Well a lot of things back in the idyllic 50’s were left to the Beaver of the neighborhood.  Including the responsibility of watching a friend’s or neighbor’s pet while the pet’s family was away.  But, nowadays, in the real world we don’t want our property or pets to be left in the care of the Beaver next door.

Hiring a professional pet sitter/ dog walker is worlds apart from getting a favor done for you when you can’t be there for your pets.  Here is why:

First of all caring for pets is the pet sitter’s job and how they make their living.  Therefore, they will be eager and trained to do the job of caring for your pets.  That means no missed let outs or dog walks.  Water and food will be supplied as necessary.  Cages and litter pans will be cleaned and yards will be pooper scooped.  Not to mention love and affection will be offered for your pet.

The professional pet sitter / dog walker should be fully insured and bonded.  This can alleviate some worries that the pet owner may have about allowing a stranger into their home to care for their pets. A professional pet sitter’s insurance covers the pet for any illness or accidents that may occur while in the pet sitter’s care.  It covers someone that your pet may injure.  It even covers damage to your property.  The pet sitter who is insured will usually be fully bonded as well.  This includes all of their employees too.

If you are trying to save some money you may say “Why not drop off my pooch at the local kennel or provide the bare necessities to keep my small pets at home alone?”  Often pet sitters are less expensive than a kennel if you have multiple pets.  In addition, the pet sitter can make your home look lived in by turning lights on and off or bringing in mail.   This may save your home from being targeted by robbers. Shop around for a sitter who offers a price that you feel is fair.  Most likely the sitter would be willing to meet with you and your pet for a complimentary informative interview before being hired to do the job.

Also, unfortunately, some pets can get sick while staying in kennels that may be overcrowded and very stressful for your pet.  A vet visit to treat Kennel Cough, a visit to the groomers, and a certain amount of time spent de-stressing your pet may be necessary after you pick them up from the kennel.

Conversely, if allowed to stay in their home with proper stimulation and attention from a caring pet sitter, a lot of stress due to you not being there can be relieved.

Even for the busy professional or the person who just can’t give up the time needed to walk their dog a pet sitter is always there for you and your pets.  Did your dog put on a good amount of excess weight or is your pup misbehaving in the house?  Enough time to exercise is a necessity for most dogs.  Fresh air and stimulation of their senses will keep them healthy mentally and physically.  This may result in less future vet bills and a good dog in the house.

Try to make your appointment with a professional pet sitter / dog walker in advance to guarantee that you find a great fit for you and your pet family member(s).  Leave the Beaver next door to his own devices for your own peace of mind and the love of your pets.
