Dancers Shake For Heights Firefighters

Heights-based Amira Mor Performing Arts Center hosts fundraiser in support of the borough's volunteer fire department

Amira Mor’s dancers took the stage Sunday afternoon, putting on a highly entertaining show in support of the volunteer firefighters of Hasbrouck Heights who she gave center stage.

“They are the heroes. They are the reason we are here today,” Mor told the audience.

Mor, whose , which bears her name, is based in Hasbrouck Heights chose the volunteer fire department as the recipient of her fundraising efforts this year. “We are here to thank you for all that you do,” Mor told the members of the fire department family who were in attendance at the fundraiser held at Michele and Milan’s banquet hall in Garfield.

Mor said she always tells her dancers not to think of anything when they are on the dance floor. They should just feel the music and the movement. She said this is what dancers have in common with the fire fighters as they do not think about what they have to do, they just do it.

“I can only say thank you from the bottom of my heart, for my men and the entire department,” Fire Chief Richard Giarratana told Mor upon accepting her donation. In the 20 years he’s been with the department he does not recall anyone putting together an event like this in their support, Giarratana told Patch.

Knowing that Mor has fundraised in support of organizations like autism and breast cancer, Giarratana said he could not be more grateful to her for recognizing the volunteers on the local level. He said the money raised helps subsidize the department’s budget and will be used for equipment needs.

Fire commissioner and Councilman David Gonzalez said he couldn’t thank Amira Mor and her dancers enough for taking the time to help the volunteer fire department. “If what the fire fighters did was easy everyone would do it,” said Gonzalez adding these the department which has about 50 volunteers currently protects nearly 12,000 residents in the borough and covers Teterboro as well.

Attendees witnessed nearly three full hours of performances by Mor’s dancers who put on a “Broadway” themed show complete with solo and group dances to songs from the “The Lion King” “Cats” and “Chicago" and more. The show also included many native of her roots.
