Fire Fighters Teach Grade Schoolers About Fire Prevention [VIDEO]

It’s Fire Prevention Week and members of the Hasbrouck Heights have been visiting the borough schools to spread the message on how they can stay safe in the event of fire.

Volunteer firefighter Mike Christensen led the youngsters at on Wednesday morning in an interactive discussion on what to do in the event of a fire.

He was joined by fellow volunteers Chris Halloran, Andrew Waring and Joe DeSiervo who showed the students what it’s like for a firefighter to suit up before responding to a fire call, what types of equipment they use including an air tank which allows the firefighters to breathe fresh air while in a building full of smoke.

They went over many safety steps such as when to call 9-1-1, to “get out and stay out” reminding the students that items such as iPods can be easily replaced but they themselves certainly can not be replaced. The children were taught to stay low if there is smoke in the house and to feel any closed doors to see if they are hot before moving into another room. 

Christensen asked the kids if they knew went to do in the event that their clothes caught fire to which the group of children quickly responded “Stop, drop and roll.” The third graders got a special treat when “Sparky the dog” came out to help demonstrate.
