Heights Police Address Concerns Regarding Attempted Lurings

Hasbrouck Heights police say they have been keeping watch for any suspicious activity in relation to recent reports of attempted luring of young children in area neighborhoods.

The reports came from Maywood and Oradell over the past week. In reported he and his younger brother were approached by an unknown older white male outside their home, according to RiverDell Patch. In Maywood, a youngster was approached by an older white male who asked the child to come with him to see his puppies, NorthJersey.com reported.

Monday night Lyndhurst police were investigating a report of an attempted child luring incident. According to NorthJersey.com two 12-year old boys reported a man tried to lure them into a van Monday afternoon.

Hasbrouck Heights police have been conducting an investigation into a suspicious incident which occurred two Fridays ago in the area of Madison and Boulevard of which there have been no criminal charges filed, said Captain Jack Delorenzo who leads the detective bureau.

The captain explained two youngsters had been seen talking to a male in a company truck but at this point the situation has not been deemed a luring attempt and there have been no similarities to the incidents reported in Maywood or Oradell. Delorenzo says this investigation is still ongoing.

Delorenzo says parents shouldn't put fear into their children but make them aware of the situation so they know to not go with strangers.

The captain says the police are always out patrolling the town especially in the areas of the schools and the places were the kids frequently walk after school like Burton and Boulevard. The department’s Walking School Bus program also helps protect kids as they have an adult with them the entire time they are walking to and from school, said Delorenzo.

The captain says if anyone sees anything that looks like it could be a luring attempt  to do one’s best to take down the license plate number and contact the police immediately.

Editor's note: This story was updated at 11:04 p.m. Monday to include information about a child luring report in Lyndhurst and 11:15 a.m. Tuesday to clarify that police are still investigating the incident in Hasbrouck Heights. At this point no criminal charges have been filed.
