Heights Police Chief Warns Against Car Burglaries

Hasbrouck Heights Police Chief Michael Colaneri is reminding residents to safeguard vehicles and homes from burglaries following reports that items were stolen from vehicles around town.

Eight reports of burglaries to autos were reported on Monday and two were reported on Saturday, according to the police blotter.

Chief Colaneri stresses that all vehicles should not be left unlocked and valuables like GPS, laptops and other types of devices should not be left out in plain view.

"Do not leave any 'sign”'that there might be valuables 'out of sight' in your vehicle, such as docking stations, phone chargers or connector cables. Leave  nothing in 'plain sight' that might make your vehicle worth 'investigating' by a thief — not even loose coins or a CD," advised Colaneri.

If they can not be taken along, Colaneri suggests they be hidden in the trunk, glove compartment or under seat.  The keys should never be left in the ignition, he says.

Colaneri advises that residents should take the steps to protect their homes as well therefore one should never leave a garage door opener in an unlocked car.

"Failing to lock all doors and windows when leaving home is one of the most common mistakes leading to home burglaries," said Colaneri.

To keep houses looking occupied when away, the chief says residents should leave a light on in one or two rooms and a radio or TV playing as it will give the appearance that someone is in the house.  People should tell trusted friends or neighbors when they will be away and how to be reached if there is an emergency. Having them pick up mail and newspapers will also help safeguard the home when away, suggested the chief.

Colaneri advises residents to not open doors to strangers and children should be advised of the same.

"Sounds simple, but too many people will allow in strangers posing as power company representatives, or other utility company workers. Ask for ID and if you're still in doubt, call the company for verification before letting anyone in," said Colaneri.

Concealing cash and jewelry in a safe and secret location is good practice as most burglars want items that are easy to carry and hide, he says.

If thinking about installing an alarm system the Chief suggests that those which activate an outside service which then contacts the Police department is best and also recommends cellular backup since phone wires can be cut, said the chief.

It's also best that people let the police department know if they plan to be away for an extended period of time, he said.

The police department will conduct a free burglary survey of one's home. To set up an appointment call 201-288-6019.
