Heights Has Lower Crime Rate Than Most Surrounding Towns

Hasbrouck Heights has the lowest crime rate in the South Bergen area according to the recently-released Uniform Crime Report for 2011.

NJ Spotlight has created an interactive map using the 2011 Uniform Crime Report that plots the total crime rate per 1,000 people for seven index crimes (four violent — murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — and three non-violent — burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft).

As the attached map shows Hasbrouck Heights has the lowest amount of reported crimes compared with surrounding towns like Rutherford, Lodi, Garfield and Wood-Ridge. The closest in comparison to Hasbrouck Heights is Ridgefield as the map shows.

Patch recently did a report on how crime rates compared in Hasbrouck Heights from 2010 to 2011 which showed a very slight increase in crime rates. A total of 81 crimes occured in the borough in 2011, up from 73 crimes in 2010, according to the Uniform Crime Report.

Overall crime in New Jersey rose by 3 percent in 2011, with the increase attributed to a jump in non-violent crimes. Violent crimes decreased slightly. The number of burglaries across the state reached a high not seen since 2003. For more on the state Uniform Crime Report, click here.
