New Flashing Stop Signs Help Make Streets Safer for Kids

Safe Route to School grant enables police department to purchase flashing LED stop signs for all crossing guards.

The scene near the schools over the past week has gotten a bit brighter, and a result, safer.

The has issued all its crossing guards with  brand new LED blinking stop signs last week, reported Councilman Justin DiPisa, police commissioner during the council meeting Tuesday.

The new stop signs are designed to further ensure safety at cross walks as the flashing signs make it easier for vehicles to spot. The new signs were purchased with funds from a Safe Routes to School grant the department received, DiPisa said.

Upon driving past intersections near the schools Thursday afternoon as a light rain and mist came down one can see crossing guards using their new flashing signs as they crossed children safely across the street. School marshalls leading a group of students in the Walking Bus Program were also seen with the new signs.

Eddie Powers, the crossing guard at the intersection of the Boulevard and Paterson Avenue at the high school, said he loves the new signs.
