Police: Economic News Could Cause Increase in Residential Burglaries

Police officials advise residents to always take precautions and make the home look occupied if planning to be away.

Reports that the price of gold reached a record high earlier this week may be good news for most, however local police say people should be aware that such news could also result in an increase in residential burglaries.

Michael Colaneri, chief of the , said that in his 32 years on the police force he has seen the number of home burglaries climb due to economic related news such as the rising price of gold.

Officials say people need to keep these things in mind so as to take precautions. Councilman Justin DiPisa, the borough's police commissioner, spoke about the link between rough economic times and increase in home burglaries during the council meeting Tuesday. He stated that rough economic times have even been linked to increased incidents of thefts at construction sites of materials such as copper tubing.
