Police Will Carry Torch Through Local Streets Friday

Once again neighborhood children will join the Heights police department members carrying the Special Olympics Torch through the borough early Friday.

The Special Olympics of New Jersey gets underway this weekend and once again members of the will be running through the streets Friday a.m. taking part in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Spectators are expected to the line the Boulevard Friday a.m. to cheer on the members of the police department, who will be joined by children from the community, as they run through the borough.

According to Chief Michael Colaneri, members of the department will pick up the torch from the Lodi Police members at approximately 9:47 a.m. at the border of Lodi and Hasbrouck Heights at Williams and Oak Grove. They will then carry the torch along the Boulevard to the border of Wood-Ridge where it will be passed on to Wood-Ridge police officers.

Although public schools will be closed on Friday, as the district uses an unused snow day, the school children were still encouraged to take part in the torch run. Those that raised $25 recieve a T-shirt and are invited to join the members of the police department in the run, according to Sgt. Joseph Rinke.
