Heights Post Office Fate Still Not Determined

The fate of the is still undecided according to a United States Postal Service spokesman although some area branches have learned that they are no longer being considered for possible closure

George B. Flood, the USPS northern New Jersey spokesperson, told Patch that no final decision regarding the Hasbrouck Heights branch has been made as of yet and the study into the possible consolidation of the branch is still ongoing. 

NorthJersey.com reported Thursday that area branches such as Carlstadt, East Rutherford and Wood-Ridge would not be closing along with two other north Jersey branches Englewood and Wayne.

As the study is ongoing, Flood said the list is fluid and branches may be added or deleted from the list during the ongoing process.

Last July, the Hasbrouck Heights branch was placed on a list along with more than 3,000 other locations nationwide that are being studied by the USPS to determine whether or not to keep them open due to the growing use of online services diminishing the need for physical offices

Flood stated that in December 2011, the Postal Service agreed to “impose a moratorium on closing or consolidating post offices and mail processing facilities until May 15, 2012 to give Congress and the Administration the opportunity to enact an alternative plan.”

Residents from the county area have attended community forums against the closings of post offices and mail distribution centers. State legislators and local officials including Heights Mayor Rose Heck have also spoken out against the possible closing of the Hasbrouck Heights office.
