HIB Reports Decrease in Hasbrouck Heights Schools

Superintendent of Schools says the number of reported violence, vandalism and HIB incidents have all decreased from the previous school year.

The number of HIB and violence incidents reported over this past school year has dropped significantly compared to the previous year.

Mark Porto, Hasbrouck Heights Schools Superintendent, shared the good news with the Board of Education and parents on Thursday night.

"I'm really happy with our district teaming, collaboration with the community, with parents and guardians in this intervention with not just HIB but as the report shows with all incidents," said Porto.

The number of reported HIB (harassment, intimidation and bullying) declined 50 percent in the first half of the school year and close to 75 percent in the second half, said Porto.

According to a chart he shared with the public, there was a total of 48 incidents reported in  school year 2011-2012 and a total of 17 for school year 2012-2013.

Porto attributed this to the staff members and the rapport they have with the students which is enables them to feel comfortable reporting these incidents so teachers and administrators can act quickly.

"I think students are also recognizing how destructive being harassing or intimidating is and we are making a change in our students awareness so  that we are increasing the respect and graciousness the students have for each other," said Porto.

Overall all incidents involving discipline including non-HIB incidents declined over the past year, Porto said.
