Supporters in the fight against cancer are already taking steps to raise funds before they even begin their official walk around the track at Depken Field next month during Relay for Life.

Fundraising for the American Cancer Society is ongoing and many community events organized by groups or individuals who are taking part in the June 2 and June 3 overnight Relay for Life are getting underway.

Students and faculty will square off on the basketball court Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the new gym to raise money for the Relay. Amanda Kistner, co-chair of the Relay and high school teacher, says admission will be $3 to get into the game and people can take part in the half-court shot contest at halftime for a donation of $2. All proceeds go to Relay for Life.

Hasbrouck Heights' Philimies McCray has put together a fundraiser in support of Team Mighty McCray, of which she serves as captain.

She has put together a Zumba event set for Saturday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at on Burton Avenue. Certified Zumba Instructor Michele Licameli will lead the class. Cost is $10. All proceeds will go towards Team Mighty McCray's fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

This weekend anyone can help take part in supporting the Relay for Life as a team will be set up in front of Borough Hall on Saturday to take donations, pass out information about the event, and sell illuminaria lanterns which can be personalized with a special message in honor someone who lost the battle or who is battling the disease.

Purple ribbons will also be for sale, proceeds benefiting the Relay for Life. Kistner and the Relay for Life team encourage all to hang some purple from homes or business fronts on Saturday to show their support for the Relay for Life.

More than $10,000 has already been raised for this second annual event. Last year nearly $70,000 was raised. This year the goal is to get to $70,000. More information can be found online at www.relayforlife.org/hasbrouckheights.
