HS Teens Can Provide Snow Removal Assistance for Seniors in Need

Program is open to those seniors who do not have family members or friends nearby to help shovel

Senior residents who do not have family members or friends living nearby to help with snow removal can prepare for future snowfall events by signing-up to get assistance from high school students who will prepare to be on hand to help out this season.

This program which has been ongoing for several years, is a collaboration between the borough and the school district. High school teacher and community service coordinator, Suzanne Kos, explained that the program matches up high school students with those seniors who are identified as having absolutely no one to turn to for help with snow removal. The high school students earn credit towards their community service requirement which is needed for graduation.

It has been stressed that the program is geared towards those senior residents who do not have any family members or friends living with them or nearby to handle snow removal for them.

Last year was a busy season as January 2011 had record snowfall events. This year has been mild so far but it is suggested that those in need sign-up in order to be prepared in the event of snow.

Those seniors interested in signing-up for the program can reach Kos by the high school at 201-288-3971 or Robert Brady, director of Recreation at 201-288-4356.
