Fire Call at High School Building Deemed False Alarm

Fire alarm went off Tuesday evening interrupting a parents meeting.

The middle school/high school building was surrounded by fire engines and police vehicles Tuesday evening while firefighters investigated a call that turned out to be false alarm. The building's fire alarm went off just after 7:30 p.m. Although classes were not in session, a Collaborative Parents Committee meeting was taking place in the media center and all were evacuated immediately.  There were no reports of any smoke. Fire Chief Patrick Hayes said the fire alarm near the stage in the auditorium had been pulled. The alarm had been reset and all was "back to normal" according to Hayes after about 30 minutes.

Drivers Everywhere But on the Road

One winds up on the train tracks, another on a front lawn.

Each week, Patch takes a peek at some of the more surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported throughout New Jersey for "OMGs from NJ PDs." On the Wrong Track: Contrary to popular belief, there is no "wrong side of the tracks." Well, not unless you count the top side. A driver who made a wrong turn wound up on the train tracks paralleling Route 17, leading authorities to shut down New Jersey Transit traffic on the line, according to Hasbrouck Heights Police. It took police about an hour to remove the vehicle from the tracks. We're not sure how long it took onlookers to remove their palms from their faces. Not Quite a Smoking Gun, But Close: You think smoking's bad for you? It's even worse if you…

Police: Body Found in Hackensack River Identified, No Sign of Foul Play

Section of Cedar Lane in Teaneck was closed Sunday as investigators worked at the scene.

Investigators have identified the body of a man pulled from the Hackensack River Sunday and found no signs of foul play in the death, police said Monday.  Police are withholding the man's name until his next of kin can be notified, Hackensack Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo said. There were no signs of trauma to the body, the captain said.  A pedestrian walking on the East Anderson Street bridge spotted the body around 5 p.m. Sunday and called 911, Salcedo said. Hackensack firefighters and police recovered the body and turned it over to the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office.  The discovery led police to block a section of Cedar Lane in Teaneck for hours while investigators worked at the scene.  First published 7:45 p.m. Sunday. …

Manahawkin Woman Used George Soros' Name in Bergen Ponzi Scheme, Prosecutor Says

Woman claimed she once worked for acclaimed financier George Soros, prosecutors say.

A Manahawkin woman bilked investors out of about $450,000 over six years by claiming their money was going to a hedge fund handled by New York City finance magnate George Soros, the Bergen County Prosecutor said Monday. Dunya Predovan, 57, was arrested Thursday on charges of theft by deception and issuing bad checks after investigators with the Prosecutor’s Office and Alpine police uncovered her Ponzi scheme, Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. Predovan told victims she worked for Soros in the 1980’s and promised a large return on the investments, Molinelli said. Soros, however, had never heard of Predovan and she had not worked for the famed financier, according to the prosecutor. “To date, none of the victims have received …

Firefighters Show Pride For Their Department

Community came to support the volunteer fire and EMS department during its annual inspection Saturday night.

Surrounded by friends, family and community leaders, the volunteer members of the Hasbrouck Heights Fire and EMS department proudly stood in front of the equipment that they use to keep their neighbors safe as they took part in their annual inspection Saturday night. Once again the department opened the fire house to the entire community and friends in neighboring fire departments to come view the equipment and apparatus, giving it a formal inspection. Fire Chief Richard Giarratana recognized fire chiefs from neighboring communities which the department works closely with, especially acknowledging the Wood-Ridge fire chiefs who he noted have really helped out a lot.   Giarratana said the men and women of the department do a lot and don’t …

Fort Lee police Saturday arrested Wilman Conde, a player for the New York Red Bulls, charging him with aggravated assault on a police officer at an apartment where officers were responding to noise complaint.

A defender for the New York Red Bulls was charged with assaulting a police officer in Fort Lee early Saturday morning after police responded to a noise complaint at a 15th Street apartment, authorities said. Fort Lee police officers arrived at the Charlton at 5:30 a.m. Saturday to find loud music coming from one of the apartments, authorities said. After opening the door, the officers were met by Fhanor Dominguez-Sanchez, the owner of the apartment, and Wilman Conde, a 29-year-old who spent years in the Colombian leagues and with the Chicago Fire of the MLS before signing with the Red Bulls in January, according to police. Police to Begin Camera Surveillance to Stop Central Avenue Park Loiterers

A portable camera is expected to be installed this week, another will have recording capabilities.

Police may begin camera surveillance of Central Avenue Park as early as this week in response to ongoing reports of loitering and noise complaints in that area. Hasbrouck Heights Police have previously received complaints from residents of Central Avenue who claim young adults have been seen loitering at the park late at night.  There have also been reports of noise complaints, littering and damage to the park surroundings. Police have said previously they have stepped up patrols of that area and have ordered the cameras as another way of watching the area and recording the activity. “We want to see when it’s happening and who is doing it,” said Chief Michael Colaneri in regards to the complaints. When asked if there have been problems …

Horse at McDonald's, Bad Guy in the Sky

Also, someone made off with a whole lot of cooking oil. Slick.

Each week, Patch takes a peek at some of the more surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported throughout New Jersey for "OMGs from NJ PDs." Big Wheels Keep on Turning: A runaway van veered into oncoming traffic on the White Horse Pike, crashed against a guard rail and nearly struck a small gathering of people at the edge of Newton Lake in Camden County (our title for this section would have worked better if it was a river onto which the van was almost rollin'). Amazingly, no one was hurt, but police say an intoxicated driver may have been asleep at the wheel. At Least it Wasn't a Cow: Scotch Plains Police say a horse escaped from Watchung Stables. After a brief chase, he was cornered by Scotch …
