Heights boys tennis takes state opener
Hasbrouck Heights boys and girls track and field teams made it a sweep when they took the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands B meet titles last week at the County Park in Palisades Park. Both teams had swept through the opponents during the dual meets during the season and easily won the May 8 meet. Both the Aviators boys and girls teams topped 290 points. The boys scored 294.50 with Wallington second at 96.50 while the girls collected 291 points with Wallington again second at 85 points. Both Heights teams dominated so much that they practically won every event. The Aviators 1600 relay teams won both the boys and girls events. The May 11 fundraiser at Banana's Comedy Club is the second of two fundraiser events the high school softball team hosted this spring.
Last chance to get tickets for the Hasbrouck Heights High School girls softball team’s Comedy Night fundraiser set for Friday, May 11 at Banana’s Comedy Club. This is the second of two fundraisers the team presented this spring. The first was a Zumba event held at the high school. The Banana’s Comedy Night will feature a stand-up performance by comedian Joseph Anthony. The team is looking to raise funds to help them purchase a top-of-the-line pitching machine which will aid them in practice. Members of the recreation girls basketball travel team brought home the first ever South Bergen Travel League championship.
One by one the members of the Hasbrouck Heights Recreation Travel Eighth Grade Girls basektball team walked up to the front of the council chamber to receive her certificate from the mayor and council Tuesday night. The team was the first to bring home this championship for the recreation department. Coach Ken Partyka told the girls it was "a hard fought year and they really stepped it up out there and did outstanding." The honored teammates are: Diljeet Kaur, Stephanie Dallara, Megan O'Leary, Alyssa Verpi, Sami Partyka, Jillian DiGiacinto, Stacey Porzi, Jilians Sears, Mary Watkins and Alyssa Bevacqua. In addition to Coach Partyka, coaches Al DeAngelo, Steve Porzi and Gene Dallara were also recognized.

George Velicky of Hasbrouck Heights came in 13th place in the marathon; 13,000 racers participated in the race.
George Velicky of Hasbrouck Heights came in 13th place with a time of 2:52:21 in the 2012 New Jersey Marathon Sunday. Velicky placed 13th in the overall marathon. He was also the top 13th male to finish the race. Nearly13,000 participants from all over the tri-state area took part in this race on Sunday. Although there were many changes to the marathon this year, including a new starting location and time, it did not stop the huge number of runners and spectators from flocking to Oceanport and Long Branch on Sunday morning. Participants enjoyed a perfect day and raced through the streets of several local towns as they raced to a finish on the Promenade in Long Branch. Heights baseball rises above .500
The Hasbrouck Heights softball team hosted a rare Bergen County Tournament playoff game last Saturday. The Aviators garnered the 30th seed and hosted 35th-seeded Leonia on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. "I would rather gain the experience in the play-in game instead of going up against a third, fourth, fifth or sixth seed," said Hasbrouck Heights head coach Jackie Ferranti. With a win on Saturday, Heights would play at third-seeded Paramus the following week in the first round. Going into the game, the Aviators were 9-7 after taking care of Weehawken, 15-4, on Friday in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands B division contest. High school varsity softball team helps assist the Little League girls
Hasbrouck Heights Little League hosted its second annual girls’ softball clinic on Sunday, April 29. The two-hour program was open to all girls, 6-8 years old, enrollment in the league. The instructional session was led by Leslie Korkgy-Valenti, the owner and chief instructor of All Starz Private Softball and Baseball training facility in Lodi. Valenti is currently the pitching coach at Felician College , and her resume includes coaching in clinics with professional and Olympic players and coaches. She was assisted by the Hasbrouck Heights High School varsity softball team and head coach Jackie Ferranti as well as league softball managers Sue McGuire and Dara Hochstadter. Aviators golf on par for the season
The Hasbrouck Heights boys and girls team came home with first place finishes at the Bergen County Relays last weekend and also finished the dual meet season undefeated. And on Tuesday, both the boys and girls defeated both North Arlington and Secaucus squads at Depken Field. The Heights girls team finished with an 8-0 record while the boys finished 7-0 with the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference meet coming on May 8 in Palisades Park. The NJIC meet is worth 2/3 in terms of points in the battle for the NJIC title while the dual meet season was worth 1/3. The Recreation Department hosts registration for the summer playground program, Camp 'Rec Trek' at the municipal building Thursday, April 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. This is the final chance to sign up for the program. Registration may be accepted after Thursday if there are still openings in the program. A $25 late-fee will be charged. The program is held at Woodland Park and runs for six weeks from June 25 until August 3. It is held each day Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with the exception of the Wednesday, July 4 holiday. The cost for the program is $60 per child for the entire six-week playground program. The fee includes all playground activities, most them days, a "Rec Trek" camp shirt. The Hasbrouck Heights girls softball team knows the definition of teamwork. On the field they always come together to play their best. Off field that team work continues as the girls their coach and their families have all come together to set up two fundraisers - a Zumba Night and a comedy night - to benefit the team. The fundraisers are in support of both the junior varsity and varsity teams. Coach Jackie Ferranti says the main goal is to raise funds towards a new top-of-the-line pitching machine which will aid them in practice.
