Security Upgrades in the Works for Heights Schools

Security consultants address assessment process and preliminary recommendations.

Over the summer months the Hasbrouck Heights school district will start to bring in new security measures based on recommendations coming in from its team of consultants. Last week Bob Pitkowski and Jack Delorenzo of CDI security team gave the public a rundown of the study they are conducting of all school facilities and introduced them to a new visitors system that will be brought in this summer. One of the recommendations they made to the board is to upgrade the visitor check-in at all schools with a management system - software that will create an ID with photo of all visitors making it easier to track and monitor everyone inside the school building. Heights Celebrates Educators' Achievements, Longtime Service

Ceremony was held at the Thursday night Board of Education meeting.

Four of Hasbrouck Heights school district's educators have been named teachers of the year for 2013 and another was honored for her many years of service upon her retirement. Thursday night the Board of Education formally recognized teachers of the year: Barbara Kritzer of the high school, Michelle DiPiano of the middle school, Donna Dussault of Lincoln School and Courtney Tacinelli of Euclid School. Helen Searle, who retires at the end of this school year, was honored by the Board for her 28 years with the district. Searle taught at Lincoln School for 10 years and then at Euclid School for 18 years.

Heights School Budget Means $238 More for Average Taxpayer

School budget for 2013-2014 supports advances in curriculum, technology and state mandated programs, according to the superintendent.

Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education approved a $28 million budget Thursday night that will cost the average taxpayer roughly $238 more on the school portion of their tax bill for this year. The budget supports curriculum advances along with meeting changes required by the state such as the newly mandated teacher evaluation program and anti-HIB programming, explained Mark Porto, superintendent who gave a detailed presentation to the public Thursday night. Porto explained the formula for tax levy cap which includes the previous year's tax levy up by 2 percent plus adjustments for enrollment increases and health care costs.  To the average taxpayer whose home is valued at $350,000 the budget means $238 more for calendar year 2013, or $19.84 …

The increase in tax listed in this article is only for the school system, now the town will also add their increase in tax and we are up probably 300 a year. At the rate taxes are going up in this town to support the school system all retirees will move out because they can't afford the tax bill and all you will have left are renters with several kids per household. Heights BOE Presents School Budget Thursday Night

School board proposes a $28 million budget for the 2013-2014.

The Hasbrouck Heights school board invites the public to hear a presentation regarding the 2013-2014 school budget during its public meeting Thursday night set for 7:30 p.m. Earlier this month the board approved a $28 million budget which would collect $25,980,566 from Hasbrouck Heights taxpayers and $135,731 from Teterboro.  A full explanation on what is proposed and how the budget would affect the average taxpayer is expected.  Compared with last year's figures the tax levy appears to have an increase of roughly 4 percent over the 2012-2013 tax levy. Heights Parents, School Heads Await Results of Security Assessment

Outside consulting firm hired to conduct the security policy review will give a presentation at the March 21 Board of Education meeting.

Hasbrouck Heights parents and school leaders can expect to learn more about what steps may be taken to make schools safer within the next month. A security assessment, which is being done by CDI, an outside consulting firm hired by the Board last month, is expected to be completed in April. According to Joe Rinke, Board president, a report of the assessment is expected in April. The process began immediately after hiring the firm in mid-February. The consultants are currently reviewing the school's security policies, meeting with school administrators and police department officials, reported Rinke. Rinke Named New Heights Board of Education President

Three Board of Ed trustees were sworn in Thursday night and new president and vice president elected.

Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education elected a new President and swore in its newest trustees at the annual reorganization meeting Thursday. Board of Education trustee Joseph Rinke was voted as the new President for the new year. Rinke formerly served as vice president. Board trustee Lillian Romano has been voted as the new vice president. Constance Doheny was sworn into a third term on the Board of Education along with trustee Mark Stefanelli who was sworn in to his first full three-year term and Robert LaMorte who was sworn into his first term. Heights Board of Ed Trustees to be Sworn in Thursday

The Board of Education will conduct its annual reorganization meeting on Thursday, Jan. 3.

The Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education will get started with 2013 business on Thursday night by swearing in three trustees to new terms. Longtime Board of Education trustee Constance Doheny will be sworn in to her third term on the Board. Mark Stefanelli will begin his first full-three year term as he had been appointed at the end of 2010 to finish out an unexpired term. A new face will join the board as Robert LaMorte will be sworn in to his first term on the Heights Board of Education. There was no contest for the three available seats on the Heights Board of Education in the first-ever November Board election. Heights Board of Ed: No Ads on Depken's Iron Fence

Board approves an advertising policy which will control where ads can be placed at school property such as its two athletic fields.

Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education has finalized its rules for the placement of advertising signs at its athletic fields putting it in writing that such ads will not be placed on the decorative iron fence at Depken field. The policy, approved by the Board last week, designates that advertising signage will only be placed on the interior fencing only facing inward towards track at Depken Field and specifies signs no ads will be posted on the iron fence surrounding the property. At Hitchcock field, located behind the high school bordering Oak Grove Avenue, ads will be allowed on interior fencing facing inward as well. Heights Board of Ed to Honor Outgoing President, Coach, Students Thursday

Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education will spend a portion of Thursday night's regular public meeting to honor the contributions of several members of the school community. Outgoing Board of Education President Josephine Ciocia will be recognized for her years of service to the board. Ciocia, an educator in the Little Ferry school district, announced earlier this year she would not pursue re-election to the board. She has served two terms and has been president for the past year. School Board Holds Off Approving Advertising Policy

Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education members say they will review communication received from the public before moving forward with adopting a policy for the sale of signs at Depken field.

Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education members say they will review communication received from the public concerning the placement of local advertising signs at Depken Field before taking the next step towards what could become an additional revenue source for the school district. The board has been working to establish a policy for advertising on school property. No such policy had been developed previously as this is the first time the board is considering selling space to local advertisers on school property. The policy was up for a second reading and approval Thursday night but the board decided to hold off on voting so it could review the communications from the public first, explained Board President Josephine Ciocia.
