Parents and students take advantage of the opportunity
For the first time in more than 15 years Hasbrouck Heights High School hosted a college fair. Representatives from more than 20 colleges and trade schools from the tri-state area were on hand to speak to parents and students about the programs they offer, financial aid, and campus life. The fair included a wide variety of higher education options including local smaller institutions like Berkeley, Ramapo and Caldwell Colleges to the larger New Jersey schools like Rutgers and NJIT. Local community collages and technical institutions such as Lincoln Tech and Parisian Beauty Academy were also represented. “I am new here and I thought that bringing back the college fair would be a great change” said Principal Steven Forte. “It was done years …

Heights' White Castle participates in chain's Valentine's Day 'fine dining' makeover
What do you crave on Valentines Day? Flowers? Chocolates? Romance? Chez White Castle, of course. Yep, America's favorite home for tiny burgers is once again giving its sterile, ceramic tile motif a makeover for Cupid's favorite day, offering decorated tables, trinkets and a wait staff. Couples can even bring their own wine. (In keeping with the spirit, might we suggest re-labeling your Ernest and Julio Gallo as a 1978 Le Montrachet). A special menu will feature White Castle "surf and turf," a joining of the famous burger and a fish sandwich. “It is the one time of year we attempt to wait on tables,” said Chris Shaffery, NJ regional director of White Castle. The Hasbrouck Heights location on Route 17 South will transform on Monday from 4 to…

Combining work of both phases could save on costs and finish project by end of the year
Borough Engineer Ken Job recommended to the mayor and council Tuesday that the borough can hope to get a better price on the work to the next two phase of the Boulevard Streetscape Plan and finish construction by the end of the year if they can present the two phases for bid together. Due to the requirements for phase three a bid will need to be awarded by August of this year, Job said. The Boulevard Streetscape Plan involves the refurbishing of the Boulevard with new brick paver ribbons, new curb cuts and new lighting. The project is being funded predominantly by grants from the Department of Transportation. For each phase of the project, which covers one block of the Boulevard on both sides, the borough has received a grant in the …

Former Euclid School principal now takes the helm at middle school
Linda Simmons takes pride in all she accomplished during her nine years as principal of Euclid Elementary School. Now she is on her way towards implementing the same methods which brought much success to Euclid students into her new role as middle school principal. “I want to focus on developing our own identity here, have our own school culture,” she commented about her new sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes which are housed in the same building as the high school. Simmons changed roles as part of the school district’s administrative restructure plan which took effect Feb. 1. Simmons was chosen to fill a vacancy at the middle school after longtime principal Edward Bolcar, Jr. left at the end of December for a position in another …

Forte takes over Feb. 1 as part of the district's administrative restructure plan
“I’m not big on anything, I’m big on everything. If it’s something worthwhile, I’ll try it.” These seem to be the words that Hasbrouck Heights High School’s new principal, Steve Forte, lives by. Forte displays that trait, not only in his personality, but also in his plans for the future of his new school. As part of the district's administrative restructure plan which goes into effect Feb. 1, Forte, who most recently was the director of curriculum and technology, will now be the high school principal. Longtime Principal Peter O'Hare will now head Euclid Elementary School. Former Euclid School principal Linda Simmons takes over at the middle school. Forte has also served as principal of Lincoln Elementary School. There is little doubt that…

Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy lives on in Hasbrouck Heights High School
On Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last birthday, Jan. 15, 1968, he held a breakfast which gathered together community leaders of myriad races and ethnicities. At that breakfast he said that this, a gathering of all peoples, was his vision and hope for the future. Today, Meron Aberha, a junior at Hasbrouck Heights High School has humbly accepted the mission of seeing that dream come to fruition. With the help of Laura Czekaj, an English teacher at Hasbrouck Heights High School, Aberha has put together “One School, Many Nations” an event that will take place on Jan. 17 , Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. On that day, as Aberha has planned, students who have volunteered to participate will set up 24 tables which will display the various aspects of 32 …
