Hundreds Relay for Life, School Board Candidates in Top Heights News This Week

Third annual Hasbrouck Heights Relay for Life event was held overnight Saturday into Sunday. See our photo gallery! School board election candidates filed petitions to run in the November election. Two Democrats challenge Republican incumbents this November. Members of the Class of 2013 took home awards and scholarships in recognition of their academic, athletic, artistic, scientific, community service and leadership. Heights Parks Improvements, Career Day Coming Up This Week

Coming up this week on Patch Park improvements continue as work to complete the construction of a new pavillion at Woodland Park are underway. Hasbrouck Heights borough officials made some final design decisions last week and it is expected that this week the borough will learn when the new pavillion will be slated to be installed. Fire Shut Down Rt. 17, HHFD Welcomes New Members in Top News This Week

Route 17 was completely shut down Tuesday afternoon as firefighters battled a small fire inside a water treatment facility at a Hasbrouck Heights gas station. Hasbrouck Heights Volunteer Fire Department brought on one new firefighter and two of the first associate members to the team this week. Coming up this week on Patch This week be sure to come to Patch for news on Corpus Christi School's recent 85th anniversary celebration and the retirement of the school's longtime principal. Hasbrouck Heights Middle School students will take the NJASK test this week. Relay for Life efforts continue this week as Team Captains will meet Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the high school media center. The Chic Charity Club has teamed up with Lovey's Pizza to host a fundraiser this Sunday, May 5 to benefit the organization's Relay for Life fundraising efforts. Heights Woman Found Dead in Atlantic City, Pedestrian Killed Tops News This Week

The Hasbrouck Heights woman and a 56-year-old Ringwood man were found dead Sunday at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City. A 31-year old Lodi man was the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Williams Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights April 6. Authorities believe a 4-door Honda Accord was involved. Old building will be replaced by four 2-family homes. See photos and video from opening day celebration. Hasbrouck Heights High School scored above average amongst its peers on SAT scores last year according to figures released by the state Department of Education this week. Actor Jay Seals, who was born and raised in Hasbrouck Heights, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2013 Garden State Film Festival Robert Pastorelli Rising Star Award. Hasbrouck Heights Republican council persons Sonya Buckman and David Gonzalez will seek re-election in November, while former councilwoman Carol A. Police Charge Pair With Assault, School Budget, 'Bugsy Malone' Top News This Week

Police charged two men in the assault and robbery of a Hasbrouck Heights man; the victim was sent to the hospital with multiple broken bones in his face. School budget for 2013-2014 supports advances in curriculum, technology and state mandated programs, according to the superintendent. Alfonso Bowen of Newark was arrested early Thursday morning after a car chase from Teterboro to Lodi for allegedly stealing a New MIlford resident's car. Classmates of 17-year old John O'Donnell of Hasbrouck Heights who died last month have organized a benefit concert for his family this Sunday in Secaucus. PBA Protests Promotion Procedures, Municipal Tax Report in Top News This Week

A new set of procedures for granting promotions within the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department was put on hold Tuesday night when a group of PBA members came forward stating that the proposed rules were unfair and that an open discussion was needed. Preliminary budget presentation given Tuesday night shows spending and tax levy are under 2 percent. Introduction of budget is set for March 26. Report shows that the Route 17 Rochelle Park - Rutherford (which includes Hasbrouck Heights) has one of the lowest vacancy rates compared to other retail corridors surveyed in North and Central New Jersey.
