Vehicle Flips Over on MacArthur Ave

Driver sent to the hospital for treatment for neck pain, police said.

The driver of a vehicle which flipped over after hitting a parked car on MacArthur Avenue was sent to the hospital Monday afternoon, said Hasbrouck Heights Police Officer Scott Adamo. Adamo said it's believed the driver was going too fast travelling east on MacArthur towards the Boulevard. The vehicle went airborne when it struck the parked vehicle and overturned, he said. The driver was given a summons for careless driving. Adamo said it is not believed the weather or road conditions led to the accident. Adamo said the driver managed to vacate the vehicle before police arrived at the scene. She was taken to the hospital to be treated for neck pain, he said. Police: Boy Struck By Vehicle is Recovering

A 13-year old was rushed to the hospital Monday evening after he was struck by a vehicle on Williams Avenue, said Hasbrouck Heights Police.

A 13-year old boy who was struck by a vehicle Monday evening while he was walking down Williams Avenue is going to be okay, according to Hasbrouck Heights Police Officer Ian Robertson. The boy was rushed to the hospital Monday just before 6:30 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle which was making a left out of the 24Hour Fitness lot while he was walking in the street down Williams Avenue near Hasbrouck Avenue, said Robertson. The boy sustained injuries to his lower legs, said Robertson. He believed the injuries were not too serious. Robertson said according to the boy's mother he was still in some pain but is making a recovery. The officer was not aware of whether the boy was still hospitalized or had since been released. Heights Police Chief Talks Security Measures Following Newtown Tragedy

Chief Michael Colaneri addresses tightening of security measures in public buildings.

Security measures continue to be discussed among school administrators, local officials and emergency personnel in the weeks that have followed the Newtown tragedy. The installation of panic buttons in schools and public buildings has been discussed both locally and regionally in recent weeks. An Essex County assemblyman has introduced a bill that would equip NJ public schools with a silent panic alarm that could be triggered in emergencies. Hasbrouck Heights Police Chief Michael Colaneri says there are advantages to panic buttons as they can be portable and triggered from anywhere however he believes calling 911 is still a faster and more effective way of getting police on site in just under one minute. Heights Police Welcome Two as Probationary Patrolmen

Two probationary police patrolmen were sworn in during Tuesday's reorganization. The new members replace veterans officers who retired in 2012.

Two new probationary police patrolmen were officially sworn in Tuesday during the annual reorganization meeting. Michael DeSimone and Nicholas Brunetti will be the newest members of the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department once they complete their police training this year. Both DeSimone and Brunetti were joined by family members as they were sworn in by Mayor Rose Heck. The two now enter police training until the middle of June, after which they will begin their training in the department, according to Police Chief Michael Colaneri. The addition of the two officers will keep the department at 29 members, said Mayor Rose Heck. Three high ranking officers retired last year, Lt. Thomas Archer after 26 years, Lt. Heights Police Promote Emergency Alert System

Hasbrouck Heights Police encourage residents to use the county OEM's Swift911 service, an alert system which will provide important info during emergencies.

As an effort to further improve the lines of communication with residents in the event of emergency situations, Hasbrouck Heights Police encourage residents to sign up for a free service from Bergen County Office of Emergency Management known as Swift 911. Residents can register all their phone numbers with this system to receive up to date information with regards to emergency notifications within the borough, according to Police Chief Michael Colaneri. The chief says this service can be used in addition to Nixle alerts which also are sent via email and text message, as well as the police department website and Patch news site to keep residents informed during an emergency.   Earlier this month Chief Colaneri and borough officials …

Hasbrouck Heights Readies for 'Frankenstorm'

Chief of police says plans are in place for what will be needed should Hurricane Sandy come this way.

Hasbrouck Heights has begun preparing for what Hurricane Sandy, also known as the "Frankenstorm," could possilby bring to the area early next week. Hasbrouck Heights Police Chief Michael Colaneri says he has met with the head of DPW, the borough administrator and the school superintendent Friday and they are all ready and prepared to deal with what may come. Luckily Hasbrouck Heights is not prone to flooding like other area boroughs but the largest concern is severe high winds which take down trees and power lines, he says. Heights Police Taking Further Precautions Surrounding Halloween

In light of the recent reports of attempted lurings in other county towns, local police departments including Hasbrouck Heights are considering earlier curfews on Halloween.

Hasbrouck Heights Police are taking safety precautions for Halloween next week even further than usual in light of the recent reports of attempted lurings in parts of Bergen County. More than a dozen attempted lurings had been reported in the past few weeks in nearby areas including Hackensack, Maywood, Ridgewood and New Milford. Area police chiefs are reducing curfews on Mischief and Halloween night to 8 p.m. Hasbrouck Heights Police may consider an earlier curfew as well although no decision has been made yet. Normally the department sets a curfew of 9:30 p.m. on both nights. Chief Michael Colaneri advises parents to not let children out on Mischief Night and advises parents to accompany children when trick-or-treating on Halloween. …

Captain Delorenzo Retires After 25 Years with Police Department

Hasbrouck Heights Police Detective Captain retires at the end of October.

At the end of this month Captain Jack Delorenzo will conclude his longtime career with the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department as he enters retirement and starts a new chapter in his career. Born and raised in Hasbrouck Heights, Delorenzo just celebrated his 25th year with the police department. Sitting behind his desk in the midst of slowly clearing out his office Delorenzo reflected on his career. He was first hired as patrolman on Aug. 10, 1987 he recalled. The captain says he always had an interest in police work from a young age. He was exposed to it early as his grandfather was involved with the auxiliary police in West New York and then later two of his uncles become police officers. Heights Police Warn of Kidnapping Scam

Police say there have been reports from area departments of individuals receiving calls from someone demanding ransom for the release of a kidnapped loved one.

Hasbrouck Heights Police want the public to be aware of a kidnapping scam which is being reported by area police departments. Police say several reports have been received by area police departments from individuals reporting they received a telephone call informing them a family member was being held against his or her will. The caller then demands money be sent to an undisclosed bank account. Police advise anyone who receives a similar call to remain calm and contact the family member immediately. If the family member can not be reached immediately, the police department should be notified. Police say the incident should also be reported once it’s confirmed the family member is safe and okay. Heights Police Investigate McDonald's Bomb Threat

The fast food restaurant was evacuated Wednesday night as bomb sniffing dogs searched the building after a bomb threat phone call was received.

McDonalds on Route 17 South was evacuated for more than an hour Wednesday night as police, fire and county bomb squad investigated a bomb threat to the fast food restaurant, reported Hasbrouck Heights Police Captain Jack DeLorenzo. The restaurant was vacated and searched by Bergen County Police Bomb Squad dogs who sniffed out the entire location.  Nothing was turned up, the captain said. The surrounding area was also checked for any suspicious persons or activity, he said. The restaurant reopened once all was deemed clear and safe, said the captain.
