Does Hasbrouck Heights Need a Historic Society? [POLL]
Talks amongst readers over the past week following the loss of Sylvester's has raised the question of whether anything is being done to preserve borough history. Take our poll or comment below.
When news broke last week that the Sylvester's Restaurant property, which was once the Old Homestead decades ago, will soon be replaced by residential homes, it sparked some discussion about historic preservation, or lack there of, in the article comments and on the Facebook page. One reader claimed there has never been a grassroots or political effort to save historical resources. Hasbrouck Heights has a known Borough Historian but there is no known historical society or committee in existence. One can not say there is no regard for historical preservation. There was a historic vignette printed in the Gazette January 2008 pg 10, basically stating that The Old Homestead Hotel had a plot reserved as a burial place for slaves. Is that the same Old Homestead property? If so, is it important or significant that human remains may be buried there?
