Porto: Changing Mid-Terms for 6th, 7th Graders a 'Possibility that Needs to be Addressed'

Superintendent Dr. Mark Porto told more than 40 parents at Tuesday night's school forum that he is receptive to the idea of putting a moratorium on mid-term exams for grades 6 and 7. The concern was raised by the mother of a 6th grader who said the exams are simply too much to handle for students that age. The community supported the idea, with no opposition raised. Porto said “It is my gut feeling that students transitioning from grade 5 to grade 6 would be better served by using the time spent on mid-terms to work on study skills and learning how to prepare for a substantial test and then phasing in midterms during 7th grade.” “It is a possibility that needs to be addressed and reviewed by the board,” the superintendent said.
