If the council approves an amendment to a zoning ordinance Tuesday, restaurants with corner properties may be able to offer more outdoor dining options.
Borough restaurants with corner properties may expand their outdoor seating if the council gives the final approval next Tuesday. The Planning Board reviewed the proposed amendment Thursday to an existing zoning code ordinance that would allow properties that qualify to put tables and chairs along the side of the properties as well as in front. The board approved the amendment adding one recommendation that the council consider extending the time frame from April 1 to Oct. 31. By extending beyond the summer months, restaurants which qualify can have a larger window to offer outdoor seating as the weather tends to be nice during early spring and fall, suggested Nick Melfi, construction code official. Police say the incidents may be linked to others in nearby towns
Police are still investigating a string of "smash and grab" burglaries at four Boulevard restaurants early Sunday morning. Hasbrouck Heights Police Captain Jack DeLorenzo said the Golden Garden and Roma Pizza, which is right next door, were burglarized. Farther south on the Boulevard, Tom Yum Koong restaurant was also burglarized around the same time, police say. Broken glass at Hasbrouck Heights Pizza showed an attempt was made but nothing was taken, DeLorenzo said. The pizza place is located just a few doors down from the Thai restaurant. DeLorenzo said these burglaries are referred to as “smash and grab” incidents where the perpetrator will use a rock or a hammer to smash in a doorway, grab what they can and get out. New restaurant recently opens
The borough now has a new cuisine to add to the list. The opening of Tom Yum Koong at 305 Boulevard last month marked the first restaurant in town to offer fresh, authentic Thai dishes that help answer the question, what’s for dinner? Husband and wife owners Jeff and Ann Sukonthorn came from Thailand and opened their flagship restaurant, also called Tom Yum Koogn, in Cliffside Park, NJ. Since they opened the doors five years ago the restaurant, and Thai cuisine, has become quite popular so the Sukonthorns decided to open another location. “People said it is a nice neighborhood,” said Ann when asked why the couple decided on Hasbrouck Heights.
