GWB Traffic Nightmare Could Begin Friday, Last All Summer

State, Port Authority warn of "significant" eastbound delays because of Cross Bronx bridge repairs, urge drivers to use mass transit, and to expect bus delays into the city through Labor Day.

This summer could be remembered as a traffic hell by the millions of people who travel east over the George Washington Bridge thanks to the closure of a lane on the oft-congested Cross Bronx Expressway from this Friday through Labor Day. The lane closure will take place on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx. The bridge is already a chokepoint, as traffic from both levels of the GWB merge onto one roadway. Several other significant roadways feed into and out of the span, including the Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway. Part of Route 17 Will be Closed Again This Weekend

Work to repair the railroad grade crossing, which runs along Route 17 in Lodi, will be done to the Northbound side this time shutting down the roadway in the area over the weekend.

Motorists are reminded that the work to fix the railroad grade crossing which runs along Route 17 in Lodi will once again shut down part of the roadway this weekend as construction continues on the northbound side. The Route 17 North roadway is expected to be shut down in the area of Route 80 and Essex Street in Lodi around 8 p.m., Friday, June 29 and will reopen around 5 a.m. Monday, July 2, the state Department of Transportation reported last week. Motorists heading north on Route 17 will be directed to take I-80 westbound to Exit 63 (Lodi/Fair Lawn) to Essex Street eastbound to Route 17 northbound, as per the DOT. Once again NJ Transit bus customers are advised to expect delays to service on Essex Street, Market Street, Summit Avenue …
