More than two dozen local pros let students in on their respective career paths.
Students gained an insider's view into a wide range of career paths thanks to the dozens of local leaders who came into the high school Thursday to share their backgrounds and choice of career paths on the annual Career Day. The list of professionals included local leaders, parents and even family members of school staff who represented careers ranging from law enforcement to sales, engineering and the military. Hasbrouck Heights Police Chief Michael Colaneri spoke to students about his career and detective background and some of the investigations he led over the years. Team came in sixth place in the smalls schools competition
Hasbrouck Heights High School went far in the Bergen County Tennis Tournament this year coming in sixth place as a team and having two of its players make it into the semi-finals. Both Giovanni Lombardi and Adam Petrovic were shut down by Dwight-Englewood players which went on to take home the championship as team tying with Saddle River. Lombardi was shut out by Dwight-Englewood's David Shutow 6-2, 6-1 in second singles and Petrovic was defeated by Martine Schechter, 6-1, 6-2.

High school students take part in Youth Week Council
This Tuesday night the governing body will take a back seat for a bit letting the members of the Youth Week council take over presiding over the council meeting. Every May, Hasbrouck Heights High School take part in this excercise which teaches them all about local government. The students take over borough roles and get to shadow their respective borough official or employee. Kevin O'Leary will serve as "mayor" on Tuesday shadowing Mayor Rose Heck. Other students will serve as Borough Clerk, Borough Administrator, council members, and other department heads. Newsweek ranks Hasbrouck Heights High School at #1309 on a list of the top 2,000 public high schools in the country.
Hasbrouck Heights High School is one of the best in the country according to Newsweek's top 2,000 best high schools list, released Monday. The high school ranks #1309, which according to Newsweek, means the school is one of the best at preparing students for college which is what its criteria for determining the rankings was based on. The criteria used by Newsweek included - graduation rate, college acceptance rate, advanced exams (AP, IB and AICE tests) taken per student, average SAT or ACT score, average advanced placement score, and percentage of students enrolled in at least one advanced placement class. The high school as entered an ice hockey coop program with Northern Valley Old Tappan High School.
This fall six hockey players from Hasbrouck Heights High School will take to the ice as part of a coop team with Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan. Through this coop team the players from Heights have an opportunity to play the sports through their high school while Old Tappan is able to add players to its team which it needs to as a result of many members graduating this year, according to NorthJersey.com Mike Scuilla, Hasbrouck Heights athletic director, tells Patch there had been talks over the past year or more about the possibliity of developing an ice hockey. Annual event has 12 high school male students vying for the title
The annual "Mr. Heights" pageant never fails to be one of the most highly anticipated nights of the year. This year was no different as 12 male high school students vied for the title showing off their talents, smarts and swimsuits in front of a packed audience last week. High school senior James "Fitz" Fitzsimmons was crowned the 2013 "Mr. Heights." The senior, a member of the football and track teams, is a veteran of the pageant having competed previous years. Once again the contestants went all out in the talent competition making the audience laugh, scream and cheer. The boys sang ballads, danced to some crazy tunes. Hasbrouck Heights High School track teams once again take home group titles.
Both the Hasbrouck Heights High School boys and girls track teams were successful last weekend at county relays bringing home group titles, NorthJersey.com reported. The Lady Aviators beat Pascack Hills 102-80 while the Aviators beat Lodi 121-75, the website reported. The Jack Yockers Bergen County Relay was held at River Dell High School.

Students showed growth in math and biology.
Hasbrouck Heights High School students ranked high above their peers on state HSPA tests, according to the recent figures released by the State Department of Education. The School Report Card for the 2011-2012 year shows Hasbrouck Heights High students ranked 100 percent above its peers and ranked 84 percent above the state average. Overall schoolwide performance was high for both language arts and math, 98 percent and 97 percent respectively. The charts below show the breakdown of how students fared in the test subject matter -language arts and math - from school year 2008-2009 to 2011-2012 and biology for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. Hasbrouck Heights falls into the majority of towns with income lower than $100,000 to not meet the state benchmark score of 1550.
In Bergen County, income and SAT scores go hand in hand. All but five of the public high schools in Bergen County where students met the state's average combined SAT benchmark of 1550 live in communities with a median household income greater than $100,000, according to data from the state's recently released New Jersey School Performance Report. On the flip side, 23 of the 24 public high schools in the county where students failed to meet the state's benchmark came from communities with a median household income below $100,000. Hasbrouck Heights fits that trend. The town's median income is $94,465 and SAT composite score fell short of the 1550 benchmark coming in at 1528. The Christie Administration released its new School Performance Reports for the 2011-2012 school year Wednesday.
Hasbrouck Heights High School scored above average amongst its peers on SAT scores last year according to figures released by the state Department of Education. Hasbrouck Heights achieved a total composite score of 1528 over the average of 1503 in its peer group. Released Wednesday, the reports are a new version of the long-running School Reports Cards that have measured school performance on a variety of metrics since the 1990s. The new reports use many of the same sources of data like student achievement, graduation and dropout rates, demographics and class sizes, but they also match each school up with 30 peer schools from across the state.
