Annual Hasbrouck Heights Spelling Bee Battle Returns Friday

More than 30 youngsters will compete at the 21st annual event at the Hasbrouck Heights Middle/High School at 7 p.m.

How familiar are you with the word 'spelunking'? Can you spell "resuscitate" without a sneak at a spellchecker? Would you have to think twice about spelling "parenthesize"?

These are examples of some of the words Hasbrouck Heights fourth and fifth graders will be facing Friday night at a township-wide spelling bee, hosted by the Hasbrouck Heights Junior Women's Club (HHJWC).

The spelling bee is being held at 7 p.m. at the Keifer Auditorium of Hasbrouck Heights Middle/High School. It's the 21st year HHJWC is sponsoring the event.

Over 30 students, who have already won spelling bees in their classrooms, will participate this year from Corpus Christi, Lincoln and Euclid schools.

The judges include Hasbrouck Heights Library Director Mimi Hui, and  Joseph Samperi, Robert LaMorte, both Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education Trustees.
Prizes and support have been donated by TD Bank of Hasbrouck Heights, the club said.
